All right boys and girls, it time to strap on your 335, crank up your Marshall stack and call up 500,000 of your closest friends. This issue we are going to tackle one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. The first time I saw Alvin play was in the movie Woodstock. I was already hooked on his music but I was floored by his stage presence. Every note had a face, an expression or body language to accompany it. Its no surprise TYA became so popular after the movie. I have heard bootleg recordings before and after Woodstock. They were all very good but I think Alvin really nailed it at Woodstock. In my opinion the guitar solo in the middle of the song was the highlight of the performance.

A few items to keep in mind. First, the entire song "I'm Going Home" is a straight 12 bar blues in the key of A. Even though there is no bass or keyboard behind the solo Alvin is still obeying the laws of bluesdom. When you practice the solo either have a friend play a 12 bar blues background or record a track then play against it. It may help to initially pl ay a straight rhythm along with the record so you can feel how Alvin times his phrasing. This is a very difficult solo to play correctly but it is well worth learning. Mastering this solo will give you a lot of confidence in your playing. Besides, its really a fun piece to play. Stay relaxed. If you find yourself tightening up try making some blues faces. I don't why this works, but it does.

NOTES FROM STEVE: The tab program I use has a nasty habit of occasionally spliting notes at the end of a line. For example a note to be played on the tenth fret may have a "1" at the end of the line and a "0" starting on the next page. It is a program error that is beyond my control. It only occurs in a few places but keep an eye out for it.

Due to time constraints I was unable to include measure breaks and timing. This tab is meant to be used in conjunction with the Woodstock recording. In the future, if you would like to see timing and other detailed transcriptions please drop a note to Toni Franklin indicating that she should allocate funds for an assitant for me.
